Strategies For Successful Team Building

Successful Team Building Strategies

Have you been charged with the task of forming a team that can work and or play well together? Whether you’re dealing with senior executives or middle school students, there are many steps to take in building a strong team where members grow from one another, respect one another and meet the challenges of their group charge.  It’s very true that people care more about how you make them feel than what you have to say. That’s the impression you leave behind. That’s also the foundation for building trust. In order for a group to work well together, they must set aside their differences and ego and commit to respecting the input off all the members of the team. Team building exercises are one way to establish this bond and trust. Take a few of these recommendations from the professionals to solidify your team so it’s up to the task for which it’s been charged.

  • Blind fold half of the team members. Create a trail of obstacles from the floor to chest height to ceiling height. Secure a length of rope along the trail. Non-blindfolded participants will pair with a blind folded partner to steer them clear of the obstacles. Partners do no touch one another. The objects are not to be called out by name. Overcoming these obstacles creates a level of trust between partners.
  • Take advantage of the awesome deals on offered by Groupon coupons and select several video games, unfamiliar to the participants, from the huge selection available from Origin. Again, working in partners, teams build through the video game exercises.
  • To promote decision making while under duress and team building, simulate a plane crash. Have the participants agree on 12 objects they must bring with them for survival. All participants must agree on each item. They must present their decision within five minutes.
  • To build trust and a deeper understanding of the life experiences of each participant, stage a two truths and a lie round table. On a piece of paper, each participant must write three statements about themselves. This can be family history, anecdotal history, professional experiences, etc. Humor and self-deprecation are encouraged. Two of these statements should be true and one should be false.  The facilitator will share, and the participants will guess which are true and which are false.

At the end of the day, ask each participant will other individual they have the least sense of in the group. Make these the parings for the evening dinner. Best of luck to you!
